UNSW Canberra at ADFA

UNSW Canberra at ADFA

Introduction:
The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) lies a short ten minute drive from the centre of the city. Within ADFA lies UNSW Canberra, a place for students to learn at the same time as training to become a member of Australia’s Defence Force, as Officers in either Navy, Army or Air Force personnel.

Degrees on offer range from Arts, Business and Science, to a range of Engineering and Information Technology degrees. Students who are accepted by ADFA to train and study at the same time, will have their education fully paid for, as well as have a guaranteed graduate position in the Australian Defence Force.

There is an undergraduate high achievement program, called Chief of Defence Force (CDF) Student Programs. These programs are open for students who enter ADFA with an ATAR high enough for those programs, or students who in their first year of undergraduate study, achieve a high Weighted Average Mark (WAM), who can then apply to transfer into the CDF Programs. Students who do not maintain the necessary requirements throughout their degree to maintain the CDF program will be transferred into the standard degree programs on offer.

Like all programs offered by UNSW Canberra, students will complete their undergraduate program alongside military training. Undergraduate students will be training as officer cadets of the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Regular Army and Royal Australia Air Force. Cadets will be selected by one of three of these arms, depending on students’ academic abilities, age, physical and personal requirements.

Students will undertake two types of military training. The first is Academy Military Education and Training (AMET), and includes subjects such as: Leadership Studies; Drill and Ceremonial; Military Communication Program; Equity and Diversity Training; First Aid and Health; Field Craft; Military Law; Physical Training; and Weapons Training. The second type of training is Single Service Training (SST), which sees students specifically train for the Navy, Army and Air Force.

Applying for ADFA and UNSW Canberra is a dual process. First of all, students must be completing Year 12 or have finished Year 11 and undertaking a tertiary package. Students must then apply via Defence Force Recruiting by visiting www.defencejobs.gov.au, and undertake an Assessment Day (include a psychological, medical and defence review), attend an Officer Selection Board (OSB) in Canberra, before they receive a job offer from the Australian Defence Force. At the same time, students must also apply for their degree through UAC, selecting UNSW (ADFA) as their first preference.

All students stay in accommodation blocks available at ADFA, with all meals provided by the Academy Cadets’ Mess. Students are also spoiled for choice when it comes to sporting facilities, with competitive sports from netball and water polo to rugby and dragonboating on offer.
